Photo Friday: Obsession

Photo Friday’s theme this week is “Obsession.”

Weight is something I am actually not obsessed with {I gave that up when I hit 30} but the photo seemed too fit the theme well! I am however, obsessed with some other things.

I am obsessed with serendipity, the color orange and the number 9. I am obsessed with old-fashioned photobooths, stories of childhood and the smell of fabric softener. I am obsessed with mochi & jam, buddhist quotes and toasted green tea. I am obsessed with yoga, Rachel Naomi Remen books and gospel music.

I am sometimes obsessed with checking my email.

I am obsessed with peering into the hearts of flowers, finding notes left in the street, and dreaming about something before it happens. I am obsessed with large bellies, ink-stained fingers and cherry red and apple green. I am obsessed with clouds and the way they puff up like a Maxfield Parrish painting. I am obsessed with my basal body temperature.

I am obsessed with storytelling, finding the right pair of boots and learning to roast a chicken. I am obsessed with birds on a wire, cats in windows and the unabashed enthusiasm of dogs.

I am obsessed with learning how to lighten up.

I am obsessed with pink dahlias, romanesque broccoli and the way downtown buildings look when you look straight up at them. I am obsessed with Amelie and the way her hand dips down into the barrel of beans at the produce stand. I am obsessed with gospel music on sundays, farmer’s market on saturdays and the fortune cookie factory in chinatown.

I am obsessed with finding beauty in tucked away places.

I am obsessed with the way colors juxtapose, the way a discarded orange peel hits the damp grey sidewalk and how the lemon tree is framed by the big blue sky.

I am obsessed with paper lanterns, sunshine through leaves, single gerber daisies in clear glass bottles, the veins and wrinkles on old people’s hands, making soups without recipies, and wearing sandals with straps that hug my big toes.

(As I just scrolled down your list of obsessions, “Amelie” is playing on the DVD player in the background.)
FABULOUS list, A! I’m obsessed with the side of my boyfriend’s neck, the color turquoise, my 7-year-old niece’s humorous intellect, hard bop, dirt roads, the Smith River, drive-in theaters, clotheslines, writers who make me laugh hard, transistor radios, desert land, drumbeats, lattes, trains, dark chocolate, flip-flops, the Caribbean Sea…and, yes, gospel music.

  15. Alexandra Sap

Wonderful entry! I, too, am obscessed with Amelie and her whole amazing essence and the world of love and whimsy she stirred up. I’m, if not obscessed, than very, very taken this week with birdhouses, how bowls of peaches look on a bright red round tablecloth on the center of my table, candleabras of past centuries, Anne Lamott’s new book “Plan B”, strawberries marinated in balsemic vinegar and sugar, and making tiny collage refridgerator magnets with little shiny bows. I’m also very taken with the idea of reconnecting with my writing self and getting in touch with how far I have strayed from my ideal work in life. *sigh* Blessings to everyone!

Obsessions~how fun. I’m obsessed with having soft hands. Tazo Green Tips Tea that leave that soft cozy zinging feeling on my brain. Holding my daughters hand as we take walks. Having the perfect pillow fit as I lay in bed. Spooning, me being the spooned one. Blowing bubbles. Dreaming about people that I haven’t thought about in months or years.
Noticing telepathy. Remembering vivid details of my hometown. Doodling. Drinking water out of tall glasses. Seeing paintings that create music or look damn edible. Giving loved ones new nick-names everyday. Obsessed with all levels of communication, especially babbling, pestering, dancing and email. Obsessed with checking out your superhero journal entries for moments like these. Thanks for reminding me of little things that mean so much.

I’m obsessed with Blogs! It’s Saturday and I told myself to leave the computer alone but soon I had that first cup of coffee and I was looking at the blank screen and the chime of the Mac went off and I couldn’t help but check in with all my favorite bloggers. You being one of them!
    ;~) Sharon

I love knowing what other people are obsessed about. It just shows so much about what someone’s really like.
I’m obsessed with fairy tales, Holocaust survivor’s stories, the smell of grapefruits, used books, being perfect, other people’s doodles and lists, faces, the number 88 (it’s two hearts), big-bellied laughing Buddhas, seeing the overlooked, the way elderly people all move their jaws the same way, Reece’s cups, men, hair, big comfortable blankets and sweatshirts, pajama pants, slippers, and childrens’ thoughts.

  23. meegan

gosh, i loove that scene in amelie when she dips her hand down into the barrel of beans at the produce stand too. when i first saw it i said, “yesss! i love doing that too!” somehow thinking i was the only one who loved doing that too, hehee. the whole movie, but that part in particular, was such a great slice of everything it means to be human.

Hi Andrea – I haven’t commented in a while, but I’m still here:) I too am obsessed with the smell of fabric softener! I can’t think of a more comforting, calming experience than walking outside, and smelling that warm smell of dryer sheets coming from someone’s dryer vent! So simple, but so powerful for me! Is it the same for you?

  25. Angela

    The colour green
    The smell of dryer sheets
