not enough sun and yet
The tomatoes are in it for the long haul.
Planted too soon in a hollow echo of cold shade,
they’ve stayed silent for weeks, peeking
shyly from the soil on the warmer afternoons,
watching for the first insinuation of early summer
to hit the northeastern corner of the back deck.
Now, mid-May, there’s still not enough sun and yet
I can see it advancing—slowly, precisely—and I’m thinking how
even tomatoes have to wait for the right moment to rise up
and show themselves.
