My friend Viola is beautiful, Italian, and like a friend once wrote about her in a song, “has eyes like pools of extra virgin olive oil…”
She and her fiance Grant are bird biologists and just returned from Antarctica where they studied penguins for the last several months. Listening to their stories is like hearing tales of walks on the moon. Welcome back G and V!

Is this Viola from glitter camp?
a friend of mine just took a group to antarctica. he’s a photographer with NG and also just returned. wonder whether it was with his group?
You are always knowing the most interesting people!*:D
You are so fortunate to know so many interesting, creative, and diverse people. But then again…you are pretty creative and interesting and amazing yourself…so I guess it all just stands to reason that you would have such facinating friends to share with us all. Thank you.
PENGUINS!!! I am soooo jealous. I once thought of emigrating to New Zealand because they have penguins.
In Edinburgh Zoo there is the famous Penguin Parade when they leave the enclosure and walk around outside the cage.
phil, who’s your photographer friend? do you know where he was? antarctica is a big place, though if he was with other penguin people we probably know who *they* are. we didn’t have any NG photographers among us…it was just us, thousands of penguins, few orca, lots of ice, and the big sea.
Oh. My God. I want to be Viola’s friend too. My friend Bianca posted a commment in my blog today mentioning this blog which directed me to Viola’s site and oh. my. god. I want to see penguins in the wild. It is my dream. I was very close to planning a trip to see the Jackass penguins in Cape Town but couldn’t afford it. But I’ve been in touch with the nice people at SANCCOB and I’m determined to get there some day for some good old fashioned penguin de-oiling.
Does Viola have an email address? Can’t seem to find one. 🙂
she’s so beautiful..!
…but I keep snickering thinking of the blog where you revealed that in your childhood,(your adolescence?) you spent hours dressing and posing your friends for photo shoots…
…not this time…right?
She looks like my brother’s ex-girlfriend!! I loved seeing all the pictures of Antarctica and the sounds of the penguins – great site link!
Andrea, I love your journal. It is always so inspiring and fun! I enjoyed the link to Viola’s penguin site. I just finished a book by one of my favorite writers, Diane Ackerman, titled “The moon by Whale light,” where she also recalls her adventures among penguins. Her writing is beautiful and colorful- I highly recommend any of her works.
Thanks for always giving me food for thought, and plenty o’ smiles!
