Zero Circle
by Rumi

Be helpless, dumbfounded
Unable to say yes or no.
Then a stretcher will come from grace
to gather us up.
We are too dull-eyed to see that beauty.
If we say we can, we’re lying.
If we say No, we don’t see it,
that No will behead us
And shut tight our window onto spirit.
So let us rather not be sure of anything,
Beside ourselves, and only that, so
Miraculous beings come running to help.
Crazed, lying in a zero circle, mute,
We shall be saying finally,
With tremendous eloquence, Lead us.
When we have totally surrendered to that beauty,
We shall be a mighty kindness.

Hi, I’m Andrea

On this blog you’ll be learning with me how to use our voices, share our creative superpowers and live life in full color.

As an artist, photographer, life coach + mentor, I’m redefining what it means to be a SUPERHERO — ‘cause in my world, it’s got nothing to do with capes, spandex or sidekicks and everything to do with tenderness, intuition & baby steps of bravery.

  1. Bohemian Girl

(from Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood).
    love the poem.
    love the Eterna tooth brushes.

  2. Lunarmusings

And I love the grace you have displayed this morning!
    Ya Ya!!!!

  3. Bohemian Girl

P.S. Everyone…please do not feed this troll lurking here. Just ignore and do what we do best and that is to love on beautiful Andrea (because it is so easy to do so).

  4. Kate

Andrea, I needed that like you wouldn’t believe. I found out today that my very close friend’s father died yesterday after a short struggle with cancer. I don’t know what to do with myself because I am here in NYC and she is in Dallas. I am struggling with time and with money because both seem to be quite scarce. Her father was such a good, strong, wonderful man. These words reminded me that all I need to do right now is think of her and send my good thoughts and memories to her.

  5. Leigh

Love everything about your journal–I’m in NC, and everytime I come to your site I feel like my own superhero. You make the dreams seem possible. Keep it up, and as so many other people have said–we love you. Your view of life is truely an inspiration to us all.

  6. kimberly

    and love
“i will, i will take care of you,”
    to everything that is

  7. amy

Thank you, once again, for posting something so peaceful and lovely.

morning andrea….i am sitting here listening our oh so beautiful mr. harper and his crazy band
of criminals…not so innocent i must say.
welcome to the cruel world. if you have it and i will assume you do. pop it in. i am in tears because of the happiness the sounds bring to me.
oh happy day to you and all of the beautiful words all share.

  9. liz elayne

these words encircle my heart this morning…
    a mighty kindness…yes. yes. yes!

  10. Pamela

Words of light for your artist soul:
    Between a good artist
    And a great one
    The novice
Will often lay down his tool
    Or brush
Then pick up an invisible club
    On the mind’s table
And helplessly smash the easels and
    Whereas the vintage man
No longer hurts himself or anyone
    And keeps on
    ~ Hafiz ~

  11. Donavan

    Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful.

” We shall be a mighty kindness”
I am copying this and posting it on my daily board.

  13. Mia

    Thank you.

  15. Emerald Market Girl

Wonderful thoughts. Thank you for inspiring my day.

  16. Sarah Pezdek-Smith

I adore Rumi’s poetry. I was lucky enough to take a workshop with Shahram Shiva. (I think his site is For half the workshop he read Rumi’s poetry with the subtle beat of percussion from various world instruments in the background. The second half of the workshop he taught us whirling. He has worked with many people including Deepak Chopra….needless to say it was amazing.
    P.S. You’ve been tagged 🙂 (

  17. jolene

oh, rumi: what would we do without you?

  18. Stephanie

Surrender brought me to your site, as it often does in moments of doubt, worry, and trouble. I am in the middle of a vaguely demoralizing job search and major life upheaval. What unexpected joy this brought me. Thank you for being so kind and eloquent to us, your readers.

  19. Kate

I read this (as well as passed out tiny copies) to my English 101 students.

  20. MaryBEth

p.S. i went to find the “candles” I had mentioned and they dont sell them anymore =(
I send you sun light from a rather hot day here in the desert of JT.

  21. cpr

You might like a show on kqed called *SPARK*– where they spotlight Bay Area artists. It’s really neat. I TIVO it. They have a website, where you can see some of the media streams if you missed the show. Just hit “artist profiles”. Like for instance Chris Cobb, the artist who did the installation at Adobe Books by rearranging all the books by color (you had a photo in Dec. 2004).

  22. nina

I think of you, dear Andrea, as one of those “miraculous beings.” 🙂

  23. cathy

Does that tiny box really hold toothbrushes? My!

  24. Leigh

    Randy–it’s not pity.
    Now go away.

  25. Amber

I’ve never posted but have been a faithful reader since being introduced to your site what seems forever ago by a friend we have in common. Maybe it seems silly, but this is where I come when the world is feeling heavy and mundane and I need to take a deep breath and see its beauty again. Thank you for that. You are truly an inspiration.

  26. tracey

    That is brilliant.
    See, another synchronicity.
