Finding the sweet spot between ease and effort

Hey friends!

A couple of months ago, after a minor break up (there are so many tiny heartbreaks in this dating thing!) a friend invited me to her yoga class. If I had known how hard it would be, I surely wouldn’t have gone. It’s been years since I had a proper practice and generally I like my exercise to be leisurely… and not too sweaty.

But this class kicked my ass and I couldn’t very well leave – the class was packed, the doors were closed, and it would’ve looked like too much of a statement! But what happened next surprised me. I got into a flow I had forgotten was possible. The class required so much focus, I had to draw on parts of me that had fallen by the wayside.

And get this, I’m stronger than I realized! So I decided to come back. And then I came back nearly every day. Some days I’m exhausted and can barely get through class, other times I’m astounded by what my body can do. I couldn’t do even one push-up when I started. Now, I can do them (okay, some of them!) with relative ease.

But here’s what I want you to know.

My penchant for ease was born out of decades of anxiety. And undiagnosed anxiety and panic disorder lent itself to optimizing for ease at every turn. I needed to protect my energy.

  • I learned how to say no to anything that would jack my nervous system.
  • I learned how not to overfunction, overdo, or overwork.
  • I learned how to set boundaries.

This was mostly in an effort to stay sane (and mostly!) in my skin. 😉 Now I would consider this my superpower. And I love to help other women find the easeful path too.

AND… it turns out I have more capacity now than I realized!

So I’m musing on the sweet spot between ease and effort. That place where we are showing up fully for our lives. Where we are not operating out of fear, but from the joy and aliveness of showing up.

The other thing that surprised me about my new yoga therapy is that where I used to avoid crowds, I’m thriving on these crowded classes. We are all on our own mat, focused on our own practice, and yet, I am drawing on the energy of everyone in the room. I show up more fully to my practice, because they are showing up fully to theirs.

All this to say, we need others to show up in our fullness in our integrity.

And this is where I come in! If you’re inspired to get some one on one coaching support, I have a summer special going on right now that ends this week! Details below!
