pickle family + other good things*

The Pickle Family, shot with my Canon S95

Good things:
1. Finding an entire family of pickles when I cut up Ben’s snack tonight. We were both very excited.

2. This quote from Rachel Naomi Remen (taken from a longer piece that is worth reading as well):
“Helping incurs debt. When you help someone they owe you one. But serving, like healing, is mutual. There is no debt. I am as served as the person I am serving. When I help I have a feeling of satisfaction. When I serve I have a feeling of gratitude. These are very different things.”

3. Listening to Danielle LaPorte’s interview (and so many other great ones) on the World’s Biggest Summit. By the way, it’s free! And you can still sign up and listen to all of the interviews in the summit so far. Mine is on Day #5.

4. Looking at the fantastic photos from my students in the fall session of Superhero Photo.

5. Finding my favorite bra again after forgetting what the name of it was. Also discovering it was only 20 dollars!

6. This fantastic Radio Lab episode where Paul Auster talks about what he calls rhyming events. Fascinating!

7. Discovering there is a new book by Marisa De Los Santos. I love everything she’s written.

8. Nico.

9. Bought my ticket to Hana, Maui to celebrate my 40th birthday in early November. Will miss my men, but very excited for this solo mission! Anything I have to do/see while I’m there?

10. Dreaming up a new Superhero Photo class for early 2012 and an in person workshop here in the Bay area. Anyone interested in joining me?

in Hana, you have to eat jungle fruit off of the trees, every kind you can find, and swim in some pools by yourself.

LOVE that you are going to Maui!

I have a photographer friend who lives there. I’ll ask her what sights not to miss. We go there – but we stay over in Napili Bay – which is the opposite side of the island. I love waking up and watching the sea turtles come up for air. I love them and I know you will too. We had our honeymoon and babymoon on Maui. incredible.

and as far as #10 goes – um – YES – Count me in! I’ve been dreaming of flying back to see you – And my dreams might come true – again? YES!

I am thrilled for you that you are going on a solo adventure, Andrea. the best lessons i have ever learned about myself have come on solo journeys. you will take thousands of photos and fill many pages of a journal (if you keep one) – and more than that, you will return with your heart full of so many stories, images, and memories that you will not soon forget. nor will you know quite how to express them to anyone else. but when you need an escape from the crazy busyness and demands of your life, when you doubt that you can get it all done – whatever “it” is – you can retreat into those memories and stories and know that you can do anything you put your mind and heart into.

Plus, who knows how many faces and animals you will see in your food on your trip!

    Have an absolute blast.

I totally understand your Coobie love. I discovered them in a tiny little dress shop on Cape Cod last summer, and they rocked my world. In the hopes of further spreading the coobie revolution I give them as birthday gifts now. Oh, and love the pickle family too. Enjoy!

i took the first photo workshop — i ended up not getting to do much with it (combo of technical difficulties and my lack of following up to get them fixed / life intervening. i’ll probably take another session later on just to do what i didn’t the first time!

i’d be up for a bay-area workshop, though!

    In response to…

#1 – I too love to find faces in things – my favorite is in nature, in the concrete sidewalks, in my freckles or those of others.

#2 – I needed to hear this – thank you!

#5 – You need the perfect panty to go with the perfect bra, I swear by these, no panty lines, hugs the curves just right, and they have lace, yippee!!! By Jockey, “No Panty Line Promise Briefs”

#9 – Are you the adventurous, must-cram-a-plan, go-go-go traveler that must see-it-all, or are you the lay-around-and-let-the-day-lead-me type? Either way, my recommendations are a full day at the spa, or two (facial, massage, pedi/mani), you could do a “40” theme – 40 minutes of yoga/meditation every morning on the beach, 40 margaritas (spread over the span of your vaca, of course!), and 40 minutes dedicated to journaling each day….

I love Marisa De Los Santos too! Had no idea she had a new book out. Yay!!

Ooooh, Maui! Nice!! I’m turning 40 in Nov as well! I so want to go on a get-away…..although I will need to wait a couple months after my bday since I’m still nursing Tessa, but it will happen! Can’t wait! I’ve had mixed feelings about turning 40 and think I’ve finally come to peace with it. Cheers to us and this new chapter we’re embarking on…it’s gonna be good!! 🙂

Good stuff indeed. Thank you. The bra looks perfect! I may have to pick a couple of those up. Looking forward to listening to Paul Auster (I read “Man in the Dark” on one of my solo trips, couldn’t put it down). And that Rachel Naomi Remen quote is wonderful–I’m actually going to share it with my colleagues.

    Hi Andrea,
I have loved your blog for ages…when i fell pregnant with my daughter in 2009, i ordered a superhero pendant for myself because i just felt like i needed some strength. we were in switzerland, all the way far away from friends and family and i just need something to hang around my neck to let me know that i could do it! i wore it for the whole pregnancy and the birth too. the day after mira was born, i found out my friend had breast cancer, so i gave the pendant to her….she needed some strength too. i had some crazy post natal depression (i didn’t know then, but i know it now) and seeing me go through that, my hubby ordered me a new pendant from you….it helped me through so much.
now my best friend is pregnant and i have loaned the pendant to her and its now bringing her what she needs for her birth.
i have been trying to find your email to let you know the journey of my superhero pendant, but i can’t find it, so had to leave a comment instead.
Just heard your interview on the World’s Biggest Summit and it reminded me to come and let you know that you might not know me, but your superhero strength stretched over an ocean to find me and really made a difference in my life!
    Thank you so much!
    Buckets of love,
    Shireen x
p.s. sorry to put this all on the comments section, but i just had to let you know xx

Thank you! I don’t usually “buy” things off the internet like this but I read your post on the day I decided that I simply had to bite the bullet and buy at least one new bra. So I did. And it arrived yesterday. And it is so soft and perfect and comfortable. THANK YOU!
